What is chronic cough?

8/19/2022

A chronic cough is when a cough lasts longer than 8 weeks in adults or 4 weeks in children. Chronic cough is estimated to occur in up to 40% of the population.
 Common causes include:
  • Asthma,
  • Allergies,
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),
  • Certain medications (ACEIs),
  • Bronchitis.
Less commonly, it can be a sign of a more severe condition, such as a Heart (Heart failure) or lung disease (Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis, Cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis or Lung cancer).
When to see a doctor:
If a chronic cough interferes with a person’s everyday activities, it often warrants further examination by a doctor. Other symptoms that may mean a person needs to see their doctor include:
  • appetite loss
  • coughing up a lot of mucus
  • fatigue
  • night sweats
  • unexplained weight loss
These symptoms cannot be handled alone and Wellspring Medical Care Clinic can help.
A chronic cough can become a medical emergency. If a person experiences the following symptoms along with a chronic cough, they should seek emergency treatment:
  • a fever greater than 103°F
  • coughing up blood
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath or difficulty catching their breath

Treatment:
Treatments for a chronic cough depend upon the underlying cause. Postnasal drip is a common cause, so a doctor may recommend the person takes decongestants or antihistamines.
Other treatments may be more specific to a particular underlying medical condition. For example, a person may be able to control their GERD through making lifestyle changes and taking medications that reduce the effects of acid on the stomach.
Those who have a cough related to ACE inhibitors may wish to talk to their doctor.
Complications
Coughing can be problematic if it interferes with a person’s daily life. A chronic cough can have the following additional effects:
  • affecting a person’s ability to sleep well if coughing keeps them up at night
  • daytime fatigue
  • difficulty concentrating at work and school
  • headaches
  • Dizziness
At Wellspring Medical Care Clinic, we have a team of doctors who are well-trained in their area of specialty.

THIS FATHER’S DAY, GIVE YOUR FATHER THE GIFT OF HEALTH
Every father wants to provide his child with the best of everything, no matter what the cost. From helping us take our first steps to managing our finances, fathers are the best mentors. They work day in and day out, even sacrificing their comforts, to earn for our needs. What our fathers have done can never be repaid with material things.

Yet, don’t you think once we grow up, we should start checking up on their health and happiness? As they age, their health and immunity go through many changes. Their nutrition needs to change accordingly.

So, this Father's Day, let’s take care of our superheroes too!
Here are some ways you help your dad to stay his finest:
  • Tailor his needs according to his age and health needs:
With age, our parent’s bodies undergo a lot of changes and their diet needs also change. To provide him with all the nutrients, we should provide him a diet with several colors.
Your father’s diet should comprise of whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies and a diet that is low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. It should have an ample amount of fiber, lean proteins, vitamins, carbs, minerals, and healthy omega 3 and omega 6 fats, healthy nuts and seeds.
Unfortunately, our diets are missing in such range of nutrients. These nutritional gaps in diet can be filled in with multivitamins. Multivitamins contain a vast array of natural healthful nutrients and minerals. Taking your supplements daily keeps the body in good working order
  • Keep an eye on his health:
Old age can make your father susceptible to a wide range of health issues. So, it is of utmost importance to make sure that your father gets regular medical check-ups. His blood pressure, blood sugar levels, thyroid profile, uric acid levels need to be monitored regularly. Set reminders and urge your dad to get his medical check-ups. Help him develop a habit of light exercise and accompany him in morning or evening walk routine
  •  Spend some quality time with them:
One of honest ways of showing them that we care is by spending time with them.
Here’s a big thanks to all the amazing dads who set the best examples for all of us.

This Father’s Day, promise to spend each day as if it were ‘Father’s Day’!
